Honoring the Healer | Amber Tamm

What is your name & location?
 

My name is Amber Tamm. I currently reside in NYC (& I’m also from here, BK all day!).
 

 

How do you heal yourself? What is your favorite form of self-therapy? | When/what was the catalyst that made you start? | How has this form of healing helped you?

My biggest form of healing has been working with plants, working with momma earth. After losing my parents, my father murdered my mother, I began farming and through that work I was able to process so much. Plants are teachers, they can teach you how to be half dead and half alive at the same time, they wear their scars proudly, they rise and fall apart so elegantly. So I just took notes from them on how to get through all the hardships that came up. By working with momma earth, this form of healing comforts me in a deep mental/spiritual sense. I believe that when I touch the earth, that I am not only touching momma earth but communing with my mother & grandmother & great grandmothers, etc. Once I put my mother’s bones in the earth, the earth literally became my mother, so farming, landscaping, horticulture works are the works that bring me the abundance that not only looks like money or doing the work that I love but also communing with my ancestors on the daily.

 

 

What is your definition of healing? (What does it look like,feel like, sound like, etc.)


Healing is a deep breath, watering plants with your tears, chamomile scented hair and airplanes across the country. Healing is not knowing, not understanding but somehow you keep going. Healing is accountability, delicate lily language and 360 degree changes. Healing is unlinear, healing hurts at first, healing is letting go. healing is knowing abundance is yours now and always will be.
 

 

What does your process look like? (Please share what you feel comfortable sharing) | How does it make you feel when you are healing yourself?

 

The first part of my process is taking accountability. I make sure to look at all my circumstances (either past or present) and re exam them to free myself from being a victim. In my process, I’ve found that when I’m victimizing myself I am not actively healing, I’m not being the best version of myself but moreso reacting. So I allow myself to go through a small victimizing time and then pull myself out of it. Once I do this, I realize I’m in control of how good I feel, of my health, of my whole well being. This is what I imagine a seed goes through as it releases it’s first sprout toward the earth’s surface. It’s hard, it’s scary, but it’s freeing. After this comes A lot of crying. I cry everywhere too, on the train, walking down the street, in bookstores or coffee shops, at work. When I feel it, I let it out.  I make sure to feel the lows just as much as I feel the highs. I think that it is so important for us to feel all of our feelings in full spectrum. 
I am also blessed  to have a very beautiful support team who understands my healing patterns and reminds of them. They help me through my toughest times. I think everyone should form a good hefty support team they can always turn to. 

 

 

Why is what you do so important/why is this form of self-helping important to you?

 

I don’t think “important” is the word to describe self-healing or healing in general. I think necessary is more of the word. We all need to heal and make more time for self healing, it is necessary for all of us right now. With all that has gone on historically globally, with all the family trauma’s we keep circulating in our blood, with all the pressures we feel daily, if one thinks they can attain anything real without doing any healing work … i truly believe they are humoring themselves. Healing/Self-healing is the work, the work that’s going to help you get clarity, understand your purpose and what makes you happy but will also equip you with tools to create beautiful relationships and a proper foundation for future generations that will need your wisdom so that they can continue towards greatness. 
 

 

What is your inspiration to continue doing what you are doing? What is the fuel that keeps you going?

 

Honestly, my mother is my inspiration. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think of her and value all the things she taught me. She prepped me for this life by helping me understand that this life I’ve created is not only my own, I am living the life that my mother, my grandmother, my great grandmother wanted but never got to live due to their circumstances. My life is a gift! My mother and grandmother died at the age of 40 and spent most of their lives doing things they had to do and I will spend mine doing all the things I want to do. I will spend it on a constant healing honey moon, full smiles and paradoxical tears. I will not go thought life only knowing pain but growing something real special from it. 
 

 

What are your visions &/or goals?

 

In recent times I’ve been dreaming of the days when the medical world sees farming and plants as a form of wellness, when farmers/earth workers can get access to tax payer dollars to continue to supply the people with good foods. I dream of the day where hospitals will buy land for farmers, or allow farmers to farm on the hospital campus to provide all patients and visitors fresh healthy foods. I dream of the days where people will not need to bring hospital patients flowers or plants because plant walls will be everywhere. I imagine babies be born and seeing the their mother’s face first and then a dangling fern right next to it. I’d love for this to be the norm at hospice centers and nursing homes too. Just green in all environments where healing, birth, dying and rebirth are happening.  

I also dream of running a real five star landscaping business where 20% of all my profits go straight to community gardens and the food justice movement. I’d love to fund the food justice movement and local farmers in general, they deserve all the money for the work that they do.


 

Tell us a fun fact about your form of healing, what it is that you do, or something people may not know.

 

DANCING. Dancing is one of the most fun healing forms for me. Sometimes when I feel the symptoms of a depressive episode, I’ll just get up and play my favorite song or call a friend and ask them to go out dancing with me. It may not ward away the depressive episode completely but it helps, cause for just a few hours or just a few minutes, I feel free. 
 

 

In one sentence, what is your message to the world?


Healing yourself is a solution to climate change.

 

 

Is there is anything else that you would like to share about yourself or your form of self-healing?

 

The last thing I want to say is healing takes time, its definetely not something that happens over night. Healing is also something that changes, healing routines will change as you continue to do. Also, in the midst of healing one thing don't be alarmed if you find other things that need healing too. thats just the process.
